This is an Amakusa whetstone that falls between the red (Torato) and the top white varieties.
It has become difficult to mine the top white Amakusa whetstones.

This falls into the medium grit category.

Amakusa whetstones are mined from the island of Oyanano Town, Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, a place associated with Amakusa Shiro's war funds.
They have long been favored for sharpening knives, carpentry tools, and agricultural tools.
Recently, due to the spread of artificial whetstones and the aging of producers, they have become less common in the market.
We are now delivering them directly from Amakusa to those who can use them.
